Eclipse Light, 2012 by Rachael Short

about this image, in her words. . .

"Eclipse Light" was photographed in 2012 during the solar eclipse. It was photographed with my iPhone which is now my primary camera after a car accident that left me a quadriplegic in 2010. The iPhone didn't capture the typical eclipse image you would expect to see but the light that afternoon was so eerie and I feel I captured that in this image. I photograph with the iPhone daily capturing anything and everything I can. Mostly inspired by nature, people, and places. "

"Seventy Flights in Ninety Minutes, Phoenix"

about this image, in his words. . .

"For three years, my family and I lived directly within the flight path of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Located in the heart of the city, Sky Harbor is the ninth-busiest airport in the United States. On any given day, some 1,200 aircraft fly through the airspace above the Phoenix suburbs. The ever-present roar of 737, much like the late-summer lull of suburban lawn mowers.

Seventy Flights in Ninety Minutes was made from the top of Hayden Butte in Tempe, Arizona. The publicly accessible volcanic butte is just beyond the airport and is straddled by Sky Harbor's two busiest flight paths. For 90 minutes, I photographed every airplane that flew overhead, and then I digitally stitched together the many individual photographs. I hoped to re-create the experience of living in a flight path by compressing an hour and a half into one apparently single moment."

"Smoke and Mirrors 7" by Ellie Davies

Fraction is very pleased to announce the Five Year Anniversary Issue
Issue 50 - May 2013

Five years. I cannot believe it has been five years. So much has happened.

Fraction has grown from an idea developed in a coffee shop by two photographers to a full-fledged business with a developing business plan. The annual Fraction Holiday Print Sale grew into the monthly Fraction Editions. I have been invited to participate in portfolio review events through out the US, and even did reviews in Moscow and China. I get to see so much great work, in person.

Like last year, I am dedicating the Anniversary issue, issue 50, to the Fraction audience that continues to grow monthly. More than 750 photographers submitted over 2400 photographs to be considered for inclusion. I am honored and flattered.

As we move forward, I want Fraction to grow with its audience. I want to be receptive and responsive to you, while still retaining my own curatorial eye and direction. If you love what I am doing and what I present each month, tell me. If you don't love what I'm doing or have some constructive criticism for me, tell me. I am sincere in my desire to communicate with you. Let's talk.

Thank you to Leo Hsu and Lauren Greenwald for joining the Fraction family in 2013. Thank you to Daniel W. Coburn for all he has done for Fraction over the last couple of years. Thank you to Jennifer Schwartz for her continued support and for being a great friend and idea collaborator.

Below is the list of the Fraction 50. Take some time to check out their work. Visit the artists' websites. Spread the word.

But mostly, thank you for being here. Thank you supporting photography and for coming along on this crazy adventure with me.

Sincerely,
David Bram
Editor-in-Chief
