Museum’s on-line exhibition of contemporary American photographers

Santa Fe, NM (November 29, 2010) - Earth Now: American Photographers and the Environment opens at the New Mexico Museum of Art April 8, 2011 and its online component can now be found on the web at http://earthnow.nmartmuseum.org.

Fraction Magazine, the on-line magazine of contemporary photography, will partner with the museum in presenting and expanding the exhibition’s web site.

Katherine Ware, exhibition curator and the museum’s Curator of Photography, selected works for Earth Now showing how a range of contemporary landscape photographers are responding to some of the most pressing environmental issues of our time, such as energy consumption, changing agricultural practices, toxic waste, and the human relationship to animals and the land. Twelve photographers will be highlighted in the Earth Now on-line exhibition.

The museum’s first socially optimized exhibition will showcase some 104 images - from Ansel Adams and Eliot Porter who place the exhibition in historical context to Subhankar Banerjee, Daniel Handal, Brad Temkin, Dornith Doherty and Sharon Stewart. There will also be a blog, a wide range of videos, podcasts of lectures, and links to other sites. The Earth Now site itself will be its own ecosystem remaining an active forum through the run of the gallery exhibition ending August 29, 2011 with frequent additions of fresh content.

One prominent link on the site will take the viewer from Earth Now to Fraction Magazine. The magazine’s participation greatly enlarges the exhibition’s scope - presenting expanded portfolios of the artists in Earth Now; a related exhibition of photographic work selected by Fraction Magazine founder and editor, David Bram; and, an additional selection of works Ware discovered after curating Earth Now, with an emphasis on New Mexico photographers.

This partnership recognizes the evolution toward an on-line presence taking place in traditional media and museum exhibitions. Speaking for the museum, Ware comments that; “We are exploring new territory with this on-line exhibition preceding the gallery opening in April. One of our goals is to give viewers a chance to engage with the photographs over time and to encourage them to comment and respond. We want the museum’s resources to be available to everyone and the site, along with the opportunity to collaborate with David Bram and Fraction Magazine, open up the conversation to a broader audience."

Bram said of his partnering with the museum on this exhibition; “I am thrilled to be working with the Museum and with Katherine Ware, as I believe this is a monumental show that will once again put New Mexico on the global map for contemporary landscape photography. I am also excited about the ability to extend the physical show to the on-line world, and to bring more museum quality photography to the growing Fraction audience." I just got home from a very emotional experience.

I was out running errands when I realized I needed to get to my bank. I turned into a neighborhood (a very nice one) that I don't normally go through, and saw a little girl, about 3 years old, walking by herself, on the sidewalk.

She was walking towards Carlise Blvd, which is a very busy and insane street. Lots of cars and no one obeys the 30mph speed limit. I stopped at the corner and waited to see where she was going. When she got to the corner, I lowered the window and asked where she was going. She said she was looking for her daddy, she then turned and ran in the direction she came from, about 100 yards to a house that she then entered. In the meantime, another gentleman in a car, as well as a woman in her own car, stopped to ask where she was going.

I was so shaken and freaked out that I called 911 and waited for the cops to check things out.

Two cops arrived rather quickly. One came silently and the other arrived with her lights and sirens going. The other witness, Chip, stayed and we both gave statements while the cops went into the house to check things out.

Apparently, the little girl was at the grandparents house with her dad, and somehow got out the front door. They had no idea she was until she walked back in, a few minutes later.

The cops said she was fine and the grandparents and dad where very scared and embarrassed. The cops were great and very quick to arrive.

Honestly, I had second thoughts about calling the cops but this little girl is not much older or bigger than my Elizabeth and I would not be able to live with myself if this little girl had been hit by a car or abducted.

I am glad I called the cops. I am glad I waited to talk to them to make sure all was well. I did the right thing.

I am still a bit upset.

Last weekend, I had the honor of receiving the Rising Star Award from the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester MA. The award was presented to me by my good friend and mentor, Mary Virginia Swanson. Everything, from the time I was told about this, was perfect, from the airline arrangements to the amazing hotel, to the fabulous ceremony and party. The Griffin is a first rate, first class institution.

Going to the Griffin

First, I made some new work for the Nov/Dec issue of Orion Magazine. You can read about the day and see the work here. I'm calling the project "Into the Espanola Valley" Jason Houston chose four photographs for the issue. Can you guess which four?

Second, I've been more and more interested in working on a project that included the idea of automobiles. The initial group of images, all shot since December 2009, is located here and is called "Vehicular". Very much a work in progress. Some influences are easily spotted.

Why so many pictures?

I've just been away for 30 days, traveling through France, Vermont and the Adirondacks Mountains of Upstate New York. This was the first trip where I did not take my Hasselblad, a couple of lenses, a light meter, and a large quantity of film. This time, I only took my 8 month old Canon 5D Mark II with 24-105mm L lens. I also took a fistful of CF cards. You know, just in case.

While on this trip, I shot just over 1600 frames. This is huge for me. I never would have been able to do this with film (nor would I want to), let alone while traveling around with my (almost) two year old daughter. In 2005, I spent 28 days in Oaxaca, Mexico and if I remember correctly, I shot about 70 rolls of medium format film, or about 840 frames. I was also processing my film there, in the apartment bathroom and kitchen, so I am sure I was being extra careful about what I was photographing. And to put this into perspective, I used to shoot about 125 rolls of medium format film, per year. I have not shot a single roll of film since buying the 5D Mark II.

To me, I think the biggest reason why photographers make more exposures is manual focus versus auto focus. At least it is for me. When shooting with my Hasselblad and film, 99% of the time, the camera is on a tripod and I am composing and metering and making sure I am getting exactly what I want. In a nut shell, no wasted film. With my Canon and the auto focus f4 lens, I often shoot "off the cuff" and often without looking through the viewfinder (my good friend Josh recently wrote about this). This happens a lot when chasing my daughter around. I just listen for the little beep that confirms the subject is in focus. Most of the time, I get the shot, but as in life nothing is guaranteed.

My solution to slowing down and making more composed photographs again, is to get myself a manual focus lens. Right now, I am eyeballing the Carl Zeiss 35mm f2 lens. Anyway, as I see it, it will force me not only to start looking through the viewfinder again, but it will make me compose more of what I am shooting. Luckily, I am not wasting film, just time and space on my hard drive (the 5D2 raw files are around 28mb on average). Now someone might say to just switch the lens I currently own to manual focus, and yes I could do that, but I really don't like the way this lens handles as a manual focus lens. Plus you really can't go wrong with a Carl Zeiss lens on a full frame camera.

On a side note, I've been told that a good friend of mine who is also using the Canon 5D Mark II with 24-105mm L lens, is having a different issue. The problem is that 5-10 years ago or so, he had a point and shoot 35mm camera for his "snapshots" and a 4x5 camera for his "artwork". Now he has one camera for both. I suppose the issue is that the images start to look the same unless there is some sort of special post processing. I'm hoping to see him next week and will find out the details.

Anyway, I rambled on a bit. So after I buy the Zeiss lens, I will write a response to this, along with some examples of the new work.

Home sweet Home

We got in last night around 930pm. So good to be home, in my own bed, in my own space.

I forgot how cluttered my desk was/is.

We were away for 30 days. In that time, I made 1610 digital photographs. I never would have made that many while shooting medium format film. This is neither good or bad. Now comes the edit to make a little magcloud for the family.

I also have a fair amount of work for the new issue of Fraction, Number 18. Fraction will be showing some work that it normally does not show. Plus a new feature will kick off on September 1.

For now, I need a coffee.

Now in Vermont

We finally made it to Wilmington last night around midnight or so, which meant I was awake and moving for about 25 hours.
Amelia was amazing and JellyBean traveled like a season pro. The flight from France to JFK was almost 9 hours. She did not cry once. JellyBean slept for more than 3 hours and did really well otherwise. THe JFK airport is a awful and seriously unorganized. It's a shame that it is a gateway to the US and the first thing millions of people see and have to deal with for the first time.
Vermont is amazing. The weather is cool and breezy. Blueberry and walnut pancakes for breakfast. The house is nice. It will be fun to have everyone here. There is a clubhouse that is part of the rental that has a large heated pool and a play room for kids. I am looking forward to seeing everyone.
France now seems so long ago.

In about 10 hours, we leave for the US. We will be in Vermont for the next week.

It's been a very nice time here in France.

Tonight, we went back to the Mediterranean Sea for dinner, to the resort town of La Lavandou. After dealing with a grumpy French waiter, we made some pictures near the Sea and then headed home to put the kids to bed.

Day fourteen in France - the last day

Today is our last day in France. This morning was the Running of the Bulls, or the chasing of the bulls is what it should be called. About ten men of varying ages chase small bulls down the main street of Collobrieres, past the main square. It's quite fun and entertaining to watch, especially from above.
We had the best seat in the whole town as the house has an outside balcony above the street and on the corner of the square. At the end of the run, all of the runners sit down on the street and pass people over there heads. Very amusing.
Now we are packing and getting ready for the 9 hour flight to NYC. Tomorrow night we will be in Vermont. Seems crazy to me.

Day thirteen in France

We got a late start today and headed for the Monastere de la Verne, an ancient monastery on the side of a steep mountain. After a few hours there, we headed for Port Grimaud, a town that was certainly designed to look like Venice, Italy. The road between the two is D14, a seriously tight road the winds along the mountainside without an barriers from keeping you from killing yourself. And people drive like maniacs on it too. If it was a one way road, it would be seriously fun in a car like a Mini Cooper.

Day twelve in France

Today we went to Aix-en-Provence, a beautiful midsize city of old architecture and fountains. The weather was quite perfect until about the time we had to come back. I noticed that the closer we got to Paris, the more transparent the women's clothing became.
I wish I had a little more time there to make some more pictures. But for now, this will suffice.
The man playing the slide guy was so fucking good. I gave him my card and asked to be notified when his CD is released. His name is Olivier Gotti and he has a few videos on Youtube. Check it out.

Day nine in France

Today we went to St Tropez and the little medieval town of Ramatuelle.

We got out of the house later than we planned and arrived in St Tropez just in time for the noon time traffic and chaos. The plan was to make it to the giant market there but we had barely an hour to get around it.

It was very hot, about 37 degrees celcius (about 98 degree Fahrenheit). There was a minor breeze but no one noticed it. The kids, as well as the adults were sweaty and cranky. Lunch time was nuts.

I tried a bit of street shooting which is something I am not used to doing. Some of the pictures are below.

After staying for several hours, we headed for a beach called l'escalet. It was a beautiful, small beach with smooth rocks right where the water breaks on the sand. JellyBean loved it. She has such a great time in the water. Especially with her momma.

Then it was off to Ramatuelle which is a walled in town on the side of a mountain. So beautiful and quiet. Tiny streets run through it. Too small for cars and almost too small for bicycles. We waited an insanely long time for pizza which we finally got to eat at 10pm.

I sat in the back of the car with the kids on the way home and they all fell quickly asleep. Watching the French landscape go by at night is really quite nice.

Day seven in France

I did not leave the house much today. Amelia and Holly had a "shopping day" and left around 1pm and got back after 7pm. JellyBean and I had lunch together and then she napped. Her problems of being backed up are no longer a problem. This is good.

While here, I have been checking the local Albuquerque news when I wake up in the morning. Today, I read some really sad news. My friend Kandace Fisher died in a motorcycle accident on Saturday. I could not believe it. Kandace and I met at Envision, a really shitty place that we both worked at. We both started on the same day in January 2000 and we were each other's sounding board for bitching about our employer and the people who claim to be running it.
Anyway, I left after 10 months but Kandace stayed for more than 4 years. We stayed in touch and would see each other every once in a while but as it often happens, people who live in Santa Fe don't often make it to Albuquerque unless they are using the airport.
Kandace was soft spoken and very sweet and one of the wittiest people I've ever met. I will miss her.

Tomorrow we have plans to visit St. Tropez and the giant market that happens on Tuesday. I will attempt to claim tomorrow as my day and will make every attempt to make some new work.

Day six in France

Today was a damn good day.
I opened the front door this morning to discover that a full fledge market had taken over the square. Directly in front of the house, about 5 feet from the door, there was a man selling shoes. Everything else could be found here from yummy olives to large cutting knives to handbags to a woman selling shark tooth necklaces. So cool.

After a quick tour, we packed up the car and headed to l'estangol, a little beach resort kind of thing. A few thousand people and some very grumpy French people who were pissed that we laid our towels down near them. These muscle heads were pretty angry. Lots of comments flying so to keep our cool heads, we packed up and moved to another section where there were lots of kids. The water is very shallow for about 100 yards or so and is rather warm. The kids loved it. JellyBean was going crazy as she would try to jump over the waves with her momma's help. It was hilarious.

We had a yummy seafood lunch. Holly had a giant lobster. I went for the Nicoise salad.

On the way home, we were trying to decide what to do for dinner when Holly and the kids mentioned the "roadside pizza". Being one who never turns down a pizza, we pulled over when we saw the truck, tossed out our beach blankets and enjoyed two, damn good pizzas on the side of the road as beach traffic slowly went by. Unfortunately, JellyBean missed out as she was passed out in the back of the car.

Day five in France

I think this is day five. We got here on the twelfth so this must be the fifth. Anyway.

Today has been a bit of lazy day. Doing laundry and getting caught up on email and such. As I write this, it is 11:15pm here and the square outside has been turned into a disco. Really. Onstage, there are two female dancers and three males dancers. It's quite funny. And yes, they too love to dance to YMCA. No seriously, they do.

Day four in France

Yesterday was a bit of a chaotic mess.
To start with we had a late start. Didn't leave the house till after 11am and then headed for the beach and some shopping in the town of Toulon.

Elizabeth was a bit crazy but the beach was nice. Oh, and like all French beaches, a lot of the women are topless. Most of the time, this is not a bad thing. Plus,
I swam in the Mediterranean Sea. Very cool.

Anyway, after a rather crappy lunch, we went to a shopping mall because our host Holly needed to return some items. After a rather surprisingly quick stay, we went to the giant food store to get some items for dinner.

By the time we got home, Elizabeth was very cranky, tired, and now running a fever. Both Amelia and I got a bit freaked out but were assured by good friends that she is fine, but was a little dehydrated and was hungry. By dinner, she had snapped out of it, was playing with the kids and then took a nice cool bath with Amelia. She's a little "backed-up" if you know what I mean and we will work on that today.

I have not downloaded my pictures for the day but will do it later.

Day three in France

I was up and out the door by 7am I think. It is Bastille Day here and I thought most things would be closed but the bakery on the square was open so I bought a giant baguette that was still warm. I think I ate three quarters of it by lunch time.
Oh yeah, lunch time did not happen because I slept from about noon to about 7pm. I guess jet lag got me.
So after a quick dinner, I took a shower and agreed to meet everyone on the square. When I opened the front door, there was a near naked woman dancing on the stage about 100 feet away. What a place!

Tomorrow we will be doing a bit of shopping and then a little time at the beach on the Mediterranean Sea. Can't wait.

Day two in France

Today, I got out of bed around 930am. I had a decent night sleep although at some point, JellyBean woke up screaming and we put her in bed with us.

Then after lunch we headed out to get some more delicious bread and a coffee and then an italian soda and little chocolate cake on the square, which right outside the front door.

Our friend Holly has a friend with a house on the mountain side and an amazing swimming pool that is somehow filled with salt water and was 90 degrees F. It was amazing. The views were terrific too.

Then home for some dinner and a walk around the town. It is so wonderful here.

First day in France

Let's start with, um, air travel in the USA sucks.

We got to JFK three hours before our flight and it took nearly 90 minutes to check our bags and get through security. Then the Delta flight was great. They let us pre-board with JellyBean, something American Airlines no longer does for parents. Plus Delta only charged us for two of the five bags with had to check. Thanks Delta. We lucked out and got a row of three seats so JellyBean had her own seat and then got to lay out when it was time to go to sleep.

Getting through immigration at the Nice airport was a breeze as was Customs. It's a beautiful and modern space.

So now we are here in Collobrieres. A very small town surrounded by 12th century ruins and chestnut groves.

Upon arriving, we dumped off our bags and went to the local bakery to pick up some amazing baguettes and then to the local butcher to pick up some very fresh ham and cheese. I am in heaven. Plus I discovered that the house we are staying in has a coffee shop attached to it, on each side. Yippee! But I did not get any today. First thing tomorrow I will be sitting outside on the "place de liberation", the square that is just outside the front door.

A little bit of time off

Starting tomorrow, I will be away for a month. My travels will take me to NYC, France, Vermont and the amazing Adirondacks.

I will be visiting Arles Photo Festival while in France, the Vermont Photo Workplace while in Vermont and then finally, I will be eating cherry pie with Phil Underdown and Jane Alden Stevens at the Noonmark Diner while in the Adirondacks.

Needless to say, Fraction too will be taking a little vacation but rest assured, Issue 17 will be released on August 1. A brand new and very exciting feature (possible spin-off) will start on September 1.

I will still have email access the entire time so if you need to reach me, send an email.

James Colton
Colton is currently the photography editor for Sports Illustrated. He began his career in 1972 as the color picture editor for the Associated Press. Five years later he joined Newsweek as a senior photo editor for international news. In 1988, he became executive vice-president and general manager of Sipa Press in New York, before returning to Newsweek in 1992 as the director of photography.
Colton is on the Board of Directors of the Eddie Adams Workshop, and is a mentor for J Camp, a national program that recruits talented high school students of color, sponsored by the Asian American Journalists Association. He was presented with the “Golden Career Award” at FotoFusion 2004 by the Palm Beach Photographic Centre, received an International Photography Awards “Lucie” for Picture Editor of the Year in 2007, was named Magazine Picture Editor of the Year in 2008 by the National Press Photographers Association, and has been acknowledged as one of the 100 most important people in photography by American Photo.

David Bram
Based in Albuquerque, NM, Bram is editor, curator, and founder of the popular and influential Fraction Magazine, now in its sixteenth issue. The goal of the online-only magazine is to provide an alternative to the fixed gallery, and to continually examine the role that photography plays in society. Fraction aims to feature the work of new artists who have yet to get the exposure they deserve, as well as very established artists who are showing off new projects. The magazine tries to show work that fits together, and work that is both strong in concept as well as execution. It also often includes guest curators and writers such as Melanie McWhorter, Mary Goodwin, and Larissa Leclair.

Alan Taylor
Web developer Alan Taylor created the photo blog The Big Picture for The Boston Globe/Boston.com. He’s responsible for researching, designing, programming, and editing the three-day a week blog, which launched in 2008 to fantastic success. In its first 20 days of existence, The Big Picture reached almost 1.5 million page views and garnered more than 1,500 comments for just 20 entries.
Inspired by publications like LIFE magazine (of old), National Geographic, and online experiences like MSNBC.com's Picture Stories galleries and Brian Storm's MediaStorm, The Big Picture is intended to highlight high-quality, amazing imagery – with a focus on current events, lesser-known stories, and just about anything that comes across the wire that looks really interesting. The majority of images come from the Associated Press, Reuters, and Getty Images. BeExposed – Awards Presentation and Celebration
The Focus Awards will be presented on Saturday, September 25, from 4:30-7:00 p.m. at Winchester Town Hall, 71 Mt. Vernon Street. The master of ceremonies is photographer Lou Jones.
Immediately following the awards from 7:00-10:00 p.m. is the Annual Gala fundraiser at the Museum, 67 Shore Road. Guests can celebrate and mingle with the recipients, enjoy live music, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, bid on the silent auction, and get their pictures taken in a photo booth.

Arthur Griffin was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts on September 12, 1903. Originally trained to be an illustrator, in 1929 he picked up his first camera—a second-hand folding Brownie—and thus began a passion that would last a lifetime. By the mid-1930’s, Arthur Griffin had become the exclusive photographer for the newly created Boston Globe Rotogravure Magazine and the New England photojournalist for Life and Time magazines. He went on to become a pioneer in the use of color film and provided the first color photographs to appear in the Saturday Evening Post—a two-page layout on New England.

Yesterday, we went to Santa Fe. A stop at Photoeye, dinner at the Cowgirl and then a talk at the Santa Fe workshops by Arthur Meyerson, Mary Virginia Swanson, and then Sam Abell.

Today, I am taking one of them to the bosque for some picture making and luckily, it is quite overcast.

Little Miss Smarty Pants

This morning, we all (JellyBean, Amelia and Me) were all messing around on our bed and JellyBean started to jump up and down on the bed. She was laughing and we were having fun. After a few minutes we said no more and I picked up JellyBean and placed her standing on the floor.
She got really pissed and tried to climb back onto the bed. Luckily, I guess, the top of the bed is about eye level for her. She is not tall enough or strong enough to pull herself up onto the bed.
After numerous attempts and lots of yelling, she still was not able to climb up. Then her eyes got bright and she ran out of the room.
A few seconds later, she came back in with a small foot stool that we keep in her room. She placed it next to the bed, and she them climbed up and started jumping up and down again. She was quite pleased with herself. Big smiles and lots of laughing.
She is only 21 months old.

Needless to say, I am in trouble.

Off to Savannah

I leave for Savannah GA in about 8 hours. I'll be visiting SCAD as a portfolio reviewer as well as part of a panel discussion on curating photography.

JellyBean just woke up from a deep sleep, cried a little until I went and picked her up.
I love her so much. I am going to miss her and Amelia a lot. I love my family and love my home.

I am grateful for these opportunities and I really do love to travel but I miss my ladies so much when I am away.

I know I am rambling. Time for bed.

I am really excited about the way this summer is shaping up.

In a couple of weeks, I will be part of a panel discussion at SCAD in Savannah GA.

Then I will be a reviewer at Review Santa Fe in June.

In July, I will be in the South of France, in a little town near Nice, for two weeks.

Then it's a cabin in Vermont, on a lake, for a week with my family.

And finally, a week in the Adirondacks.

It's going to be an exhausting time but I cannot wait.

I've never been to Europe and yet JellyBean will make it there before she turns two. It's a shame she won't remember much.

First Wednesday's March Salon will be held on March 3rd, 2010, with the opening reception starting at 6:30pm and the salon running from 6:45pm to 9pm. This month's Salon will be guest hosted by Fraction's David Bram and will feature presentations by a few of the College of Santa Fe's Fine Art Photography Program students: Micaela Butts, Matthew Morrow, Bobby-David Mitchell, Jared Pitts and Cliff Shapiro. The program for the evening will begin with each student making brief presentation of his or her work and finish with an open portfolio presentation where the audience can walk around, view the work of each student and interact with the photographers individually. We hope this evening will help introduce the students of CSF and their program to a larger audience and allow those students the opportunity to speak about their work outside of the campus.

Has Fuji killed Neopan 400 ?

This seems really strange considering they are about to release their new medium format film camera, the GF670 in about a month or so.

Terrific Time in Tucson (yes that was intentional)

About a month ago, Jonathan Blaustein asked me if I was interested in doing a road trip to Tucson for the opening of the landmark photo show, New Topographics, at the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona. I said yes and then invited David Ondrik along, who said yes, and then invited his wife. So on Friday 2/19, the four of us packed up Jonathan's new car, the Silver Beaver, and hit the road for Tucson.

Jonathan and I provided a very boring soundtrack while DO provided a wide ranging and very entertaining soundtrack. Dee Lite and Siouxsie and the Banshees still ring in my head.

We arrived at the Hotel Congress about 4pm and found that there was about to be a whole lot of people in the lobby, courtyard and bar as the Hotel Congress is the biggest and noisiest night club in downtown Tucson.

At 5pm, we headed over to CCP after the very accommodating Ken Rosenthal picked us up and drove us there along with Jim Stone. I got to see very little of the show as I was distracted by meeting Greg Friedler and Frank Gohlke and trying to keep my eye on the clock because of the scheduled 6pm talk. The talk consisted of Frank, Bill Jenkins and Britt Salvesen. It was a very casual talk and quite fun. A very enjoyable night.

After the talk, Jonathan, David and I, as well as Ken Rosenthal and Greg Friedler, were invited to a dinner party that Mary Virginia Swanson organized. I heard that there was something like 80 people there. I got to meet a whole lot of people including Eric Kroll.

The dinner was fun and done by about 10pm and then we headed back to the Hotel Congress. After dealing with a very loud crowd, we (me, Greg, Jonathan and Ken) decided to take a walk. Well, to keep this short, we were nearly mugged by a crack head, meth head, drunk Mexican monster (5 foot 11 and about 250 pounds) screaming he was going to kill Ken and that he was a member of the Mexican Mafia. We escaped into a waiting taxi, made it back to the hotel and drank some more. Welcome to Tucson. I went to bed about 230am.

On Saturday morning, Jonathan, Greg and I had breakfast in the hotel and then Jonathan and I met up with Ken and spent the day running about Tucson. We went to a graduate student open portfolio where Ken and Jonathan grilled a few students. We also went to see Lisa M Robinson's show of her work Snowboard. A terrific show in a tiny place. Ken also took us to a sandwich shop called Beyond Bread, which was amazing and I highly recommend it. But the day started out with a run through the rain to the Terry Etherton Gallery to see the Kate Breakey show, Poetics of Light, which are full size photograms of dead animals. Amazing work.

Saturday night was dinner at Swannie's. Her husband Hal made a great posolè and lots of margaritas. It was a small party that included Frank Gohlke, Carol McCusker, Jim Stone, Greg, Ken, David, Becky and me. It was so noisy in the hotel, that Jonathan and I bailed early on Saturday morning and stayed at Ken's house. He was kind enough to offer up his two daughters rooms. I got to stay in a very red room that had Twilight posters all over it. I spent the night with Edward staring at me. It was also another night of going to bed after 2am.

On Sunday, we hit the road about 10am or so. The weather was nice and we had lunch in Hatch, NM, a funky little town that is known for it's chili.

Anyway, I am sure that I am missing a lot here and will come back.

I am now home from Tucson and the New Topographics Photography show at U of A. It was a really great time with fellow travelers David Ondrik, Becky Holtzman and Jonathan Blaustein.

We got to meet so many great people and spend a lot of time with a few as well.
